Phil Arkow

photo of Phil Arkow Phil Arkow is an internationally acclaimed lecturer, author and humane educator who teaches two courses on Animal-Assisted Therapy and Animal-Assisted Activities at Camden County College in New Jersey. He writes "Pet Pals", a weekly newspaper column on pet care. He has authored or edited numerous articles and nine key reference books in the fields of the human-animal bond, humane education, animal-assisted therapy, violence prevention, and animal shelter management.

He chairs the Latham Foundation's Animal Abuse and Family Violence Prevention Project, under whose auspices he has written two manuals and a textbook to cross-train employees of animal shelters, child protection agencies, and domestic violence prevention programs to recognize and report each other's forms of family violence.

Active in the animal care and control communities since 1973, he was a professional humane educator for 20 years. He has served on national boards and advisory committees of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Delta Society, the National Animal Control Association, and the American Humane Association. He owns !deas, a business which produces fundraising materials for humane societies nationwide.

He has lectured at animal protection and veterinary conferences in 32 states and territories from Alaska to the Virgin Islands, in six Canadian provinces, and internationally in Japan, South Africa, Monaco, Israel, Japan and the United Kingdom. He is also Marketing and Communications Officer for The Philadelphia Foundation.
