Coaching People to Train their Dogs : Using Motivational Exercises Presented as Games |
Terry will present a sample of ideas and methods for conducting positive and fun pet dog training classes. A greatly condensed version of her eight-day residential course, this overview will use video, power point, demonstrations, games and audience participation. Dogs will not participate in the workshops, but are welcome to "hang out" with their humans. Participants will have fun brushing up on technical terms and concepts by playing Legacy's "Training Jeopardy" game which prior to this year has only been offered at Terry's school in Washington. as an educational exercise, answers will be discussed. Several handouts will be included and Terry's new instructor's book "Coaching People to Train Their Dogs" will available to purchase at the workshop. Attendance both days is recommended.

Terry will begin by sharing segments from the actual behavior and training orientation to her pet dog classes. A classroom approach for addressing behavior problems will stress the Hippocratic oath: "first do no harm". The students will work with Terry on lateral thinking problems. Various techniques for instructional formatting and sequencing exercises will be explained. "How People Learn, How Teachers Teach" will help with interpersonal skills and varying teaching and learning styles. She will include methods for demonstrations, constructing handouts and other appropriate AV for classroom use.

Building on the previous day's concepts, practical "ready to take home" ideas for your classes will be presented. Terry will go over her new ongoing drop-in puppy class format which follows a teacher's choice "Puppy Menu" for each class. A lesson plan sampler of "what to offer after beginners" will be shared. Ways for adapting classes and exercises to your particular clients will be addressed.
The pros and cons of playing games in class will be discussed. Several new and
unpublished games will be demonstrated, including "personal best" games.

ABOUT TERRY RYAN |
Terry Ryan's enduring area of interest is in pet dogs. A busy national and international workshop presenter herself, Terry also hosts camps and seminars taught by well-known dog experts from around the world. Her business, Legacy Canine Behavior and Training, Inc., founded in 1975, conducts a wide variety of community pet dog classes. These events are held at their training and conference center which was opened in the Fall of 2003.
From 1981 until 1994, Terry was the program coordinator for Leo Bustad, then dean of the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine and founder of the People-Pet Partnership, an organization active in the human-animal bond. She has maintained membership and held various offices in local, national and international organizations including past president & board member of the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors. She is a charter member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and a CPDT (certified pet dog trainer). A class instructor since 1968, Terry specializes in using motivational exercises presented as games. Terry was a committee chairperson for the research and writing of "Professional Standards for Dog Trainers, Effective, Humane Principles" (Delta Society, 2001).
Starting in 1990, Terry has been spending several months each year in Japan teaching a national dog training class instructor program for the Japanese Animal Hospital Association. She also is a director of and teaches several times a year at the Animal Fanciers School in Tochigi, Japan--a residential training complex where instructors are trained and classes are taught. Terry helped create and often conducts the Japanese Canine Good Citizen testing and passport program that allows entry of qualified dogs into participating national hotels and restaurants.
From 1994 until 1998 Terry taught yearly ten-day instructors courses for the Animal Welfare League in Australia. Terry is on the advisory board to the Institute of Ethology at the North American Wildlife Foundation at Wolf Park and teaches a six-day workshop there every summer. Terry was one of the first members of the Delta Society, working on a variety of human-animal bond projects and was a Delta Pet Partners Instructor and Animal Evaluator from1993 until 1996. Her early work with dogs included search and rescue, animal assisted activities and a bit of service dog training. She has been training and exhibiting her own dogs in obedience, conformation and tracking since 1966. Terry became an obedience trial judge in 1984 and is currently on emeritus status.
Terry was a regular contributor to the training column of American Kennel Club Gazette from 1995 until 2002. She is the author of a variety of publications and articles in several different languages on the human-animal bond, behavior, training and dogs in general. Most recently she has written "Games People Play... To Train Their Dogs",1995, "Life Beyond Block Heeling, 1996; Most recently she has authored "Leadership Education for Anyone with a Dog", 2001, "The Bark Stops Here", 2000, and has produced sound desensitization CD's for puppies and adults. Her latest book is a textbook for instructors, "Coaching People to Train Their Dogs", 2004 all published by www.LegacyCanine. In 1998 Howell published her book, The Toolbox for Remodeling Your Problem Dog."

DOG RULES |
DOG STUFF
Dogs may lay by your chair in the seminar room as long as they remain
quiet, leashed and under control at all times. Crates and
exercise pens allowed in the adjacent room ONLY.
If your dog can't be confined in the adjacent room and
remain quiet, please don't bring your dog. Any dog that is
disruptive or behaves in an aggressive manner as determined
by event staff will be requested to leave. Any dog that has
"personal space issues" is not allowed in the seminar room.
Remember chairs are right next to each other and people and
dogs may be stepping over your dog. It is not a nice
experience to be snarled at when dogs/people have to walk
"over" your dog.
No dogs can be left in vehicles if the outdoor
temperature exceeds 70 degrees even if all windows, doors
and/or hatches are open.
Leaving
dogs in a vehicle when the outdoor temperature exceeds 70
degrees IS AGAINST THE LAW.
DEMONSTRATION DOGS Attendee's dogs will
be chosen by the speaker for demonstration purposes. There
will be opportunities for you to work your own dog, however
this is NOT A WORKING SEMINAR.
DOG
ETIQUETTE You are responsible for
cleaning up after your dog. There are no excuses for not
picking up after your dog EVERYWHERE.
CURRENT VACCINATIONS All dogs entering
the facility are required to have up-to-date
vaccinations.
SANCTUARY POLICY Please, no prong collars
on dogs in the facility. |

Take the Mebane (southwest bound) or Mebane
Oaks Rd. (northeast bound) exit (#154). Turn south (away
from Mebane), go 6 miles, turn left on to Nicks Rd. The
Sanctuary will be 0.5 miles on the left at 6311 Nicks Rd.
FROM ALAMANCE COUNTY
Take Hwy 54 East one mile past the
Orange County Line, turn left onto Mebane Oaks Road. Go 2
miles, turn right on to Nicks Rd. The Sanctuary will be 0.5
miles on the left at 6311 Nicks Rd.
FROM CHAPEL HILL/CARRBORO
Take Hwy 54 West out of Carrboro
approximately 12 miles from the city limits, turn right onto
Mebane Oaks Rd. (there is a road sign for Saxapahaw to the
left at this intersection). Go 2 miles, turn right onto
Nicks Rd. The Sanctuary will be 0.5 miles on the left at
6311 Nicks Rd.
FROM RALEIGH/DURHAM AIRPORT
Leave the airport and take I-40 West (towards Durham and
Chapel Hill). I-40 merges with I-85 west of Hillsborough.
Continue on I-40/I-85 West to exit #154/Mebane. At the end
of the exit ramp make a left (south) onto Mebane Oaks Rd.
Take Mebane Oaks Rd for six miles to Nicks Rd and make a
left. The Sanctuary is a half mile down on the
left. |
