SEMINAR PROGRAM

Day One • Thursday • May 5th • 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM & 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM


DAY ONE - tracking to recover lost property - police style, AKC tracking competition style, and British Working Trials style.Getting started - how to teach a dog to track a person and recover lost or hidden property (firearms, clothing, etc.) -

  • Starter tracks and track laying
  • Effect of wind and terrain on tracks
  • Straight line tracks
  • The first corners
  • Free tracking
  • Tracking on harness and line
  • Line handling
  • Indicating lost property
  • Age of tracks
  • Cross tracks
  • Variable surface tracking

Requirements: dogs can be any age from 8 weeks to 4 years in age or older if in good shape. You will need a TRACKING harness (not a walking harness!) and 25 foot tracking line, a bag containing five different types of food rewards, five different toys that the dog enjoys playing with and lots of enthusiasm. Dogs need no formal obedience training and do not need to do a recall as they will be on a harness and line or collar and lead at all times. It is also important that they are fine around people that they do not know! (no aggression problems please).

Day Two • Friday May 4th • 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM & 10:00 PM - 1:00 AM


DAY TWO - Trailing Either AKC for lost property or more importantly Search & Rescue to find a missing person -

  • Straight line starter tracks
  • Reading the terrain
  • Cutting corners
  • Track ages
  • Location of victims
  • Pursuit tracking
  • Night time tracking exercise

In addition to the requirements above you will also need to bring a flashlight (a headlamp is best) plus two light sticks and a means of attaching them to your dogs harness.

ABOUT JOHN ROGERSON

John Rogerson is the founder and principle lecturer of the Northern Centre for Canine Behaviour. He is widely acclaimed as one of the world's leading trainer/behaviourists, having pioneered many of the techniques that have now become standard practice in behaviour therapy and training. John is the author of seven books and has produced two videos. John is in great demand as a training and behaviour consultant and in this capacity runs many courses worldwide to impart his skills and knowledge to others. During the seminar and outdoor workshops, please turn off all cell phone and pager audio alerts. Please take all private conversations away from the area the speaker is presenting.

VIDEOTAPING
Please, no videotaping or audiotaping is permitted.

BABIES
The presence of a baby is likely to be distracting to other participants, so we ask that you refrain from bringing any babies or very young children into the lecture hall.

A selection of books, videos and toys will be available for sale.

REFUND POLICY
Full refund issued if requested by email or phone no later than Wednesday May 2, 2007. Refunds requested after Wednesday, May 2nd will be issued a 50% credit slip (less food purchases) that may be applied to future Puppyworks educational events. No refunds or credits after 12 Noon, Thursday, May 3, 2007.

BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR
Metal or plastic chairs are available for seating. If you prefer more comfortable seating, we encourage you to bring your own chair. Please no oversized or high back chairs.

New York State Thruway (I 87) to Exit 19 Kingston (91 miles north of New York City or 51 miles south of Albany, NY). After toll, stay to the farthest right at the round-about, and follow signs for Route 28 to Route 209. After about 1/4 mile on Route 28 go through one light and almost immediately thereafter take Route 209 South in the direction of Ellenville. Stay on Route 209 South for exactly 13 miles, and just past Sparrow Hawk Bed and Breakfast, you will come to Rondout Valley Animals for Adoption on the right. Seminar will be held in the large blue training building closest to the road.
