4-Day Training & Teaching Workshop

Tuesday thru Friday • May 27-30, 2003
9:00 am - 4:00 pm each day

Each day will focus on one exercise and will give an indepth insight into how to train it. Each day consists of two lecture sessions, a group workshop and a practical training exercise that attendees will either carry out with shelter dogs. This is a very interactive course and is aimed at teaching all of the skills necessary to train, instruct and deal with behaviour problems in class.

Lectures include:

How a dog learns, the use and misuse of rewards, a brief history of dog training, the use of compulsion (lecture only!!!) Building a reward history on the dog/owner, running group class, running an in-home training service, quick fixes for behaviour problems, dog training-what the public want, competition training, training for specialised tasks.

Group workshops include:

  • Dog aggression in class
  • Behaviour problem solving
  • Teaching specialised tasks
  • Dealing with fear problems
  • Handling difficult dogs

Practical sessions include:

  • Training instant control at a distance
  • Leash walking
  • A review of competition exercises
  • Specialised task training

ABOUT JOHN ROGERSON

John Rogerson, founder and principle lecturer of the Northern Centre for Canine Behaviour is now widely acclaimed as the world's leading trainer/behaviourist, having pioneered the majority of techniques that have now become standard practice in behaviour therapy and training. John is the author of no fewer than seven books, has produced two videos. John is in great demand as a training and behaviour consultant and in this capacity runs many courses worldwide to impart his skills and knowledge to others.

John has recently been given the honour of being invited to sit on the committee of the Companion Animal Welfare Council, whose function is to advise Parliament on issues relating to companion animals in the U.K. John is a founder member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and is the founder of Support Dogs and Dog Aid. John lives with his wife Moira, who is one of the greatest dog trainers in the world, in a converted pub in the North of England and both compete in working trials with their eight dogs. John has worked and qualified more different breeds in this sport than any other trainer and also participated in the first ever open agility competition in the world.

DOG RULES

DOGS AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY
This seminar will take place in the AUDITORIUM. Shelter dogs will be used for demonstration purposes in the pavilion during the afternoon sessions when it is no longer being used for classes by the Humane Society. Please read carefully the rules indicated below concerning dogs. We ask that you follow and respect the rules listed below. These rules have been approved by facility management for the safety or your dog(s).

  • NO DOGS are allowed in the auditorium, so please leave your dog at home or in your hotel room.
  • Due to the warm weather at this time of the year, dogs CANNOT be left in your vehicle even if all windows, doors and/or hatches are open. You can and will be cited by a humane society Animal Service Officer and your dog will be removed from your vehicle.

PEOPLE ETIQUETTE: During the lectures, please turn off all cell phone and pager audio alerts. Please take all private conversations outside while the speaker is presenting.

VIDEOTAPING/AUDIOTAPING POLICY: No videotaping or audiotaping is permitted.

BOOKS & TOYS, ETC. FOR SALE: A selection of books, videos and toys, etc. will be available for purchase.

CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: A full refund issued if requested by email or phone no later than Friday, April 25th. Refunds requested after Friday, April 25th but before Monday, May 19th will be issued a refund less $100.00. Refunds requested after May 19th will be issued a 50% credit slip that may be applied to future Puppyworks educational events. All refunds must be requested by email or phone. There are no exceptions to this policy.
