SEMINAR OUTLINE
TRAIN ON THE CUTTING EDGE: Advanced Training Theory for Top Achievers
Saturday & Sunday • April 12-13, 2003
9:00 - 5:00 pm each day

Are you a closet training geek? Do you lie awake at night thinking of the best way to teach your dog a new trick? Do you obsess about whether your cues are overshadowed and your secondary reinforcers conditioned too much? Do you use a random number generator to plan your reinforcement schedule? Have you read Ken Ramirez's Animal Training from cover to cover and longed for a second volume? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, this workshop is for you! Put away your clicker and come spend the day immersed in CR's (conditioned reinforcer), RR's (random reinforcer), and NRM's (no reward mark) at the advanced training theory workshop.

Psychologists have spent decades studying how animals process information and, to date, trainers have merely grazed the surface of this material. In this interactive workshop, we'll explore a range of exciting topics, including the distinctions between learning, memory, motivation, and cognition, open and closed economies, the different types of feedback involved for intermittent schedules, autoshaping and superconditioning. We'll answer some of today's burning issues: What's the best way to teach difficult discriminations, such as left and right directions? Can a marker differ from a bridge? Do free rewards improve behavior or impair learning? What are the multiple meanings of No Reward Markers and how do you condition them? Do jackpots really facilitate learning? How good is a dog's memory? What types of information are coded in the dog's brain? Can dogs learn by imitation? What did Pavlov contribute to solving behavior problems, such as fear and aggression? You'll leave with a whole new collection of "tricks" for your training bag and even more questions to ponder with your fellow geeks!

We'll stimulate your brains with lecture, video examples, live demonstrations, Q and A sessions, and group activities. Don't miss this opportunity to position yourself at the cutting edge of dog training in the new millennium. Why jump on the bandwagon when you can be driving it?

PRE-REQUISITE:
This workshop is NOT for the faint of heart (a.k.a. "beginners"). You need a fundamental understanding of operant conditioning and how it works in the real world.

Since this is an advanced seminar, Dr. Reid and Puppyworks will presuppose a level of experience with the material. The speaker will not be going over beginning training theory because this requires too much of the seminar time. We highly recommend you read Pam's book Excel-erated Learning! prior to attending this seminar. You may purchase this book ahead of time and we will ship it to you FREE OF CHARGE. Please allow 7-10 days for delivery.

This program builds on each day, two day attendance required.
