Dog Owners - You Can't Live With Them and You Can't Live Without Them
Tuesday • February 18th
8:00 AM-noon
Trish King

Aren't they wonderful? They're so intelligent and cute and often willing to please - although that's certainly not always the case. Sometimes we have to use lures, often we need rewards and always we need to understand their motivation.

In this case, we're not talking about dogs - we're talking about their owners! Though many, if not most, dog trainers got in the business for the animals, it's the people we must deal with on a daily basis, and that takes people skills - tact and understanding.

If you don't know the problem, you can't offer solutions! And if your clients won't listen to the solutions, they wonāt solve their problems. Getting "the facts" and motivating clients to comply are the keys to successful training.

In this presentation, we'll discuss the various kinds of people you might have to deal with in your practice, how to recognize them, and what to do with them!

Got D.A.S.H. in your Training?
Tuesday • February 18th
5:00-8:00 PM
Susan Garrett

Have you become a slave to your dog's treats? D.A.S.H. (Desire, Accuracy, Speed and Habit) will help you to:

  • Understand the effective use of rewards
  • Determine the optimum duration for your training sessions
  • Train through distractions without corrections
  • Design a training program around the needs of each dog

Using Humor In Consults And Classes - Reinforcement For The Owner
Wednesday • February 19th
8:00 AM-noon
Trish King

Often dog owners are worried sick about their dogsā problems - and some are very angry at their dogs - so angry that they may even have considered giving the dog up. In most (definitely not all cases), keys to success include bringing out the humor in a situation, putting the problem into perspective, and helping the client laugh as she/he learns how to modify her/his dog's behavior.

In this discussion, we'll not only talk about how to help clients see the lighter side of their problems, we'll use taped and live mock consults (volunteers needed!). Tips, hints and audience participation will keep this entertaining and fun.

  • How to turn your dog on to attention
  • Teaching you how to be more fun than other dogsā rear ends

ABOUT SUSAN GARRETT

Susan Garrett's interest in animal behavior started at the University of Guelph where she earned a BSc in Animal Science. Since then she has developed into a preeminent canine sports instructor and competitor. Each dog Susan has competed with in agility has made at least one appearance in the finals of a national event and her dogs have won 11 different national Agility Championships since 1996. Susan has been a member of a world record holding flyball team for eight consecutive years. In addition, she is one of Canada's top obedience competitors; each of the four dogs she has trialed has earned at least one High In Trial award.
