SEMINAR PROGRAM

Problem Recognition -- Canine Body Language (Arousal to Aggression) with SARAH KALNAJS
Saturday • May 17th • 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

We will observe a number of video case studies of canine behavior problems. Sarah will present each case on day one with an overview of some of the body language cues highlighted in each instance. Among the cases will be:

  • Aggression in Puppies (two or three cases: one concerning fear, one general aggression and one resource guarding)
  • Intraspecific Aggression (Dog - Dog)
  • The aroused aggressive dog (to people and other animals)
  • Resource Guarding (multiple cases)
  • Barrier frustration (invisible fences and leash reactivity)
  • The fearful / anxious dog (showing timidity at a dog park)

Problem Resolution with PAT MILLER
Sunday • May 18th • 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Pat wIll show a "reminder" 30 second clip of each case on day two to reintroduce the cases presented on day one and talk about whether behavior modification would be appropriate in each case and, if so, an overview of what she would do for modification. Pat will then detail behavior modification (or management) protocols as they apply to each of these cases Pat will be emphasizing her positive reinforcement methods in the course of this analysis. Among Pat's techniques:

  • Counter conditioning and desensitization;
  • Operant conditioning;
  • Constructional Aggression Treatment (CAT) as studied and developed by Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz and Kellie Snider;
  • Shaping; Identification and elimination of stressors;
  • Building confidence and teaching coping skills.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

SARAH KALNAJS is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (Int'l.Assoc. of Animal Behavior Consultants) and Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT) with over ten years' experience working in canine behavior, training, and research. She is the owner of Blue Dog Training & Behavior in Madison, Wisconsin. Sarah is one of the editors of the peer-reviewed Journal of Applied Companion Animal Behavior and is a member of the advisory board and faculty of the Companion Animal Sciences Institute and the Humane Society of the United States' Humane Society University. Sarah is also an instructor of courses on dog-related topics for Raising Canine. Sarah is the producer of the popular and highly praised DVD series, Language of Dogs and Am I Safe. In addition to her private practice, Ms. Kalnajs is president of Wisconsin American Eskimo Rescue and political liaison for the Wisconsin Dog Rescue Coalition as well as an Executive Committee Member of AAFMED (Arf's Angel Fund for Medical Assistance) which provides financial aid to rescued pets in need of medical help. A popular speaker and freelance writer, Sarah presents seminars nationwide on topics relating to dog training and behavior. She has been interviewed by BBC radio, NBC television, Wisconsin Public Radio, Women's Health & Fitness magazine, and Honolulu magazine, and has written articles for APDT Chronicle of the Dog, Madison magazine, Allpets, and other publications.

PAT MILLER has been training dogs for more than 35 years. In childhood she trained the family Collie for 4-H competition. Her professional life has always revolved around animals, first as a hunter-jumper (horse) trainer in Wisconsin, then for 20 years as a humane officer at the Marin (CA) Humane Society. During those years she also trained with nationally acclaimed obedience instructor Judie Howard. Pat started her Peaceable Paws dog training and behavior center in Monterey-Santa Cruz in 1996, and moved it toTennessee in 2000, where she also launched the Peaceable Paws trainer academies. The center moved to an 80-acre campus in Fair Play, MD in 2004, and added Reactive Rover and Shaping Camps. In 2001, Pat was one of the first 136 trainers to receive a CPDT (Certified Pet Dog Trainer) title from the CCPDT, and was awarded the CDBC (Certified Dog Behavior Consultant) title from the IIABC in 2004. She is also past president of the APDT. Pat presents seminars internationally, is training editor for the "Whole Dog Journal" and regularly contributes to that publication as well as "Bark" magazine, "Popular Dogs", and Tufts University's "Your Dog." Her first book, "The Power of Positive Dog Training," was released by Howell Books in August 2001. Dogwise Publishing released her "Positive Perspectives" in 2004, and a follow-up volume, "Positive Perspectives 2", in January 2008.
